Frensham school

5 Dec

After almost 2 months traveling, it is time to go back to work! Mais quel travail…!

I found a job in a school called Frensham, or maybe Frensham found me, located 2 hours away from sydney in a country town that goes by the name of Mittagong. It is a girls only boarding school and this has been one of the most enriching experiences in my life. I’m going to try to describe it for you, but really…you have to be there to trully know how special it is…

Foutains, flowers, trees, forests, the natural environment is perfect to study in peace and have a breath of fresh air when work or studies gets  a bit tough… The girls have access to all the facilities they could dream of: dining room, theater room, heaps of computer rooms, art gallery, cafe, equipped gym, hockey turfs, netball and tennis courts, a variety of music instruments (from orgue to batterie),…

The boarders are distributed in 5 different houses located on the school ground. My opinion of a boarding school was that it must be cold and austere, but this school is the total opposite.. The warm cosy houses become the girls’ home and they make themsleves feel at home too with teddies, dunas, pillows and all types of personal decorations…

A range of traditions and costums pervade throughout the generations and makes this place so unique… on birthdays, the special girl gets to wear a hat made of flowers or hundreds of colored ribbons attached to her hair by her exited friends; on their first day at the school, they get a “crack”, some older girl who is gonna support her all throughout her stay at frensham and usually strings and strong friendships develop; when girls exceled in specific domains, they get awarded a colored girdle and on excellency an iris; friday night is dress up night and the girls come with the most creative and crazy ideas!….

The philosophy of the school is based on the motto “In love, serve one another” and puts an important focus on Arts, languages and sports. Let me tell you, that I hve rarely seen so much talent in such a small space! These girls are not just students..they are musicians, painters, drawers, athletes, artists, award winners,…. They kept blowing my mind day after day…

another example: The philosophy of the school is based on the motto “In love, serve one another”. So, on their arrival
at Frensham, each girl gets a “crack”, an older girl who is gonna support her all throughout her stay at frensham and
usually strings and strong friendships develop.

In terms of education, Arts, languages and sports are considered subjects just as important as maths or English.

they are musicians, painters, drawers, athletes, artists, award winners,…. They kept blowing my mind day after day…

“My work maily consisted in working on the students’ oral skills, since the year 12s had a French oral exams
for their HSC (=Alevels or BAC). On the photos here you can see some of the friedly year 12s who made me laugh a lot
during our little conversation sessions (“je suis très exitée”!!! 😉 I also worked with younger students, from 12 to 18.
Then i was offered to be a “housie” (housemistress) in oe of the houses on the school ground (a bit like a
substitute mum for 70 girls) So my job was to wake the girls up in the morning (“Come on girls, wake up!!!”), make sure
they brushed their teeth, put on their uniforms, go to class and in the evening, make sure they put on their
pyjamas ad stop talking after lights are out. ..; (girls, shhhhhhhhhh!!!!”). So tjis enabled me to get to know the girls
better and develop friendhsip with some of them….

So this is what makes this school so special: the people. Staff, teachers, headmistress, students… All so adorable, caring and generous… They welcomed me on the 1st day like no school in France would ever have, received me like a gest of honour! The girls were always willing to speak French to me and were always nice, loving and fun! They made me feel at home from day 1. I could never have wished for better…

So this is just a small insight of the world I lived and worked in for 2 months, but there is so much more to it… I learnt a lot there and I hope I inspired them as much as they inspired me..

So special thanx to Ms Gilick, Liliane, Trish and Mary who have made this possible…and to the girls for being so wonderful…
